"Conquering Your Accent": Your accent results from how, where, and when you learned the language you are speaking and it gives impressions about you to other people. People do not have a single fixed accent because of their experiences with different type of people. We can control the way we speak and do both, consciously and unconsciously. Most people vary their accent depending on who they are speaking with.
The goal is to ensure you are speaking clearly and confidently through your accent, so you are not making others uncomfortable, and they are not straining to interpret what you are trying to say. Master your accent and become an effective and successful communicator. Few tips on how to control your accent:
· Buy a pronunciation book. Check for CDs in the back and whether they are British or American English.
· Practice pronouncing words as explained.
· Record yourself and check your progress continuously.
· Memorize useful North American or British slang, depending on where you are, and current idioms and expressions, etc. to integrate them whenever possible.
· Control your volume, and stress key content words to keep listeners focused.
· Control your rhythm and pace.
· When in doubt of the correct pronunciation, use a good North American dictionary or British English dictionary, depending on where you are living or studying, to check the phonetic instructions of sounds and syllable stress.
