communication tip
"Use of contractions in conversation": In casual conversation, using contractions such as "he's" instead of "he is" or "she'll" instead of "she will" is a good way to put other people at ease. While using more formal phrases is technically correct in any conversation, using phrases that are too formal for the situation can cause others to feel uneasy.
Here are a few commonly used contractions and their meanings:
E.g.
- Don't use the copier; it's jammed. - We've finished the project on time. - I'm going to lunch. - She's in a meeting right now.
word/phrase
"Silver Bullet": A quick solution to a difficult problem. The phrase comes from the European folklore tradition that only a bullet made of pure silver could kill mythical creatures such as vampires or werewolves.
E.g. "The latest software update is the Silver Bullet we've been searching for."
commonly confused
"Accept , Except": Accept is a verb meaning to receive. Except is a preposition meaning with the exclusion of or excluding.
E.g. "She will accept the promotion at next week's staff meeting."
E.g. "Delete all the files except those which have been modified in the past week."

i Wind Chill Factor : In the Winter, most news stations and newspapers will report two temperatures: the actual air temperature and the Wind Chill Factor. The Wind Chill Factor is always lower than the actual air temperature, and is a more accurate description of how cold it feels to a person. For example, if the air temperature is 35 degrees and the wind is blowing steadily, it will feel significantly colder than 35 degrees outside. You should use the Wind Chill Factor to decide how warmly to dress, and even whether it is safe to take a walk outside. When the Wind Chill Factor is low enough, prolonged exposure can result in hypothermia or frost bite.
