WEI Jingsheng and Marie HOLZMAN of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation Give Invited Speeches at the 3rd World Forum on Human Rights in Nantes, France
In the morning of July 1, 2008, WEI Jingsheng and Marie HOLZMAN of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation gave invited speeches at the roundtable of the 3rd World Forum on Human Rights in Nantes, France. The topic of the round table was: “Economic Sanctions, Political and Athletic Boycotts, Opinion Campaigns and Human Rights: Condemn? Convince?”
The main part of the round table was to discuss if pressures should be exerted on countries that violate human rights, or should the international community rally to the calls for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics.
Also giving speeches were Jampal Sochang, representative of his Holiness the Dalai-Lama in France; Isabelle Dubuis, coordinator of Info Birmanie, France; Yannick Guin, vice-president of Nantes Metropole; Franci Perrin, member of the International Executive Committee of Amnesty International, French section; and Michael Sutclffe, city manager of Durban/E’Thekwini Municipality of South Africa. It was organized by Toogezer and moderated by Michel Taube, publication director of Toogezer publications.
A lot of attention was focused in Asia, especially China. Mr. Jampal Sochang stressed the seriousness of Tibetan human rights violations, especially since last March. Marie Holzman described current situations in China.
In Mr. Wei Jingsheng’s speech, he pointed out the overwhelming human rights violations in this world by various dictatorial governments, which all have a chief sponsor supporting them. This is the Chinese Communist dictatorial government. If we do not apply pressure on China, and do not change the Chinese government’s violation of human rights and its political tendency to support to the violation of human rights, then the human rights affairs all over this world will suffer setbacks and ignorance. Mr. Wei also described the details of the Chinese government’s “diplomacy through business orders”, which has brought trouble and corruption to the officials of various countries.
The atmosphere was enthusiastic at the round table. Many journalists and conference participants followed with more questions and discussions even after the roundtable. People all expressed their concern about the Chinese government’s suppression of global human rights progress, as well as an interest in the relation between a boycott of the Olympics and defending human rights.
Wei Jingsheng also received several interviews especially in regarding Beijing Olympics and human rights issues. Both Wei Jingsheng and Huang Ciping received a lengthy interview on Internet freedom for political and social progress. Wei Jingsheng answered questions as how they use Internet to advocate and promote human rights and democracy. Huang Ciping presented in detail of her own experience as the computer manager and network operator working for a university.
