Wei Jingsheng Gives Interviews and Lectures at Festival of Modernity on Liberty by the International University of the Second Renaissance in Milan, Italy
On July 5 and 6, 2008,WEI Jingsheng was in Milan, Italy, to attend and to give lectures at Festival of Modernity on Liberty of the International University of the Second Renaissance, organized by Spirali publication. During his 2 speeches, his main topics were about democracy and China. During the Q&A session, he answered questions about his 18 years in jail for promoting democracy and about what has supported him to survive and to live positively. In addition, he also received several interviews by newspaper, magazine, radio and Television.
In his speech, Wei Jingsheng described the current situation in China and pointed out that democracy and human rights shall prevail in China eventually. In particular, he pointed out that back 30 years ago when he first published his well-known essay "The Fifth Modernization - Democracy", not many people in China even agree with democracy. However, nowadays, it is a term and something Chinese people really know and wanted, even the current Chinese Communist leaders repeated what he said as their own in an effort to strive for popular sentiments.
The festival invited well-known professors, scholars, writers and activists as speakers and was hold in the beautiful Villa San Carlo Borromeo. Several hundreds people from several dozens of countries attended.

魏京生应邀在意大利米兰参加第二次文艺复兴国际大学举办的“现代节"演讲并接受若干媒体的采访
2008年7月5日与6日,魏京生应邀在意大利米兰参加第二次文艺复兴国际大学举办的“现代节”并演讲。此次节日的专题是“自由”。在他的两次演讲中,魏京生的主题是民主与中国。在提问阶段,魏先生回答了他的18年牢狱中的细节以及他为什么能乐观地活下来。此外,他还接受了若干媒体,包括报纸、杂志、电台和电视的采访。
在他的演讲中,魏先生描述了目前中国的现况并指出民主与自由终究会在中国实现。他特别指出,在他发表“第五个现代化 - 民主”的30年前,没有多少中国人同意“民主”;如今,民主成了中国人民不仅同意、而且向往并要求的现实,甚至是中共领导人都重复他说的话来争取民心。
受邀讲话的有世界各地的教授、学者、作家和实践者们。来自几十个国家的数百人参加了这次活动。
