美东时间10月9日下午，中美洲国家巴拿马发生7.7强震，震源仅12公里，造成建筑倒塌，地面开裂。首都巴拿马市摇晃剧烈，民众纷纷冲出户外避难。强震触发多国的太平洋海啸警报。
据美国地质调查所（USGS）表示，地震发生在美东时间9日下午1时56分，震央位于巴拿马中南部皮塔洛萨阿里巴（Pitaloza Arriba）一带，震源深度约12公里，属于极浅层地震。之后不久，又发生了两次分别是5.8级和6.6级较强地震。
首都巴拿马市虽然与震央有一段距离，当地仍感受到强烈震动，不少民众急忙逃到户外。
网上传出大量视频显示，巴拿马多省多处建筑倒塌，损毁严重，很多车辆被砸。

地震灾区居民罗森多‧多明格斯（Rosendo Domínguez）在接受美联社电话采访时说：“震感非常强烈。厨房里的东西都被震倒了，虽然我们人没事，但都吓坏了。大家都跑到外面来了，都很害怕。”
巴拿马位处地震活动频繁的环太平洋火山地震带，强震发生后官方随即发布海啸警报。根据最新预测，巴拿马部分太平洋沿岸地区可能出现1到3米的海啸波浪。
美国海啸警报系统也发出警告，表示海啸可能会袭击东太平洋沿岸地区，未来数小时内，哥斯达黎加、萨尔瓦多、秘鲁、墨西哥、危地马拉、巴拿马、尼加拉瓜、哥伦比亚和厄瓜多尔的部分沿海地区可能出现“危险的海啸波”，民众可能会被卷入大海或被水中的漂浮物压伤。
巴拿马国家民防局官员奥马尔‧史密斯（Omar Smith）表示，受灾情况主要集中在中部的贝拉瓜斯省（Veraguas）、埃雷拉省（Herrera）和洛斯桑托斯省（Los Santos）。埃雷拉省首府奇特雷（Chitre）以及洛斯桑托斯省沿海地区均有受灾报告。
